Ad Gefrin is a unique Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery based in Wooler, the heart of Northumberland.
Nestled in the foothills of the Cheviot Hills, Wooler is a market town known as the “Gateway to the Cheviots.” It offers visitors a warm welcome, rich history and breathtaking landscapes that make it one of Northumberland’s most scenic valleys.
When it comes to location, the distillery is perfectly placed. The purest of Cheviot water is brought up from a borehole beneath their feet. Some of the finest malting barley is grown in fields within sight of the distillery and the climate is all a distiller could wish for!
Visitors to Ad Gefrin can celebrate the history and heritage of the Anglo-Saxon Golden Age through the seasons. Each season offers a programme of themed events as they travel on a journey through an Anglo-Saxon year.
The highlight must be Ad Gefrin’s immersive distillery tour and tasting. This offers a behind-the-scenes look at how spirits are crafted, combining ancient traditions with cutting-edge sustainability.
At the end of your tour, an Alchemist will take you on a journey in the tasting room. Sample a selection of Ad Gefrin whisky, explore the flavours and how to drink whisky if you are new to it. It is the perfect way to deepen your appreciation of the craft and discover your personal favourite.
Guests will enjoy sampling the award-winning Tácnbora blended whisky and Thirlings Northumbrian Gin. The Ad Gefrin Single Malt Whisky is currently under production with an expected release in 2027.
Ad Gefrin also boasts an Anglo-Saxon Museum and Great Hall which brings to life the royal court of the 7th-century kings and queens of Northumbria! Visitors will experience immersive exhibits, stunning artefacts and interactive storytelling.
No trip is complete without a visit to Ad Gefrin’s Bistro – Bēodern. Celebrating the best of Northumbrian produce, their food reflects local heritage and traditions and is creative and contemporary.
Visitors can enjoy coffee and cake, a light lunch, brunch or sharing platter, or maybe something more hearty. Afternoon Tea packages can be booked on the last Saturday of every month. Of course Sunday lunch is a favourite every week!
Why not take a piece of Northumberland home with you?! Ad Gefrin’s gift shop is full of designer makers, hand-crafted and original items and gifts, including their amazing whisky and gin.
