Bolam Lake

If you’re looking for a peaceful, scenic place to walk in Northumberland, Bolam Lake Country Park is one of the region’s most beautiful and accessible spots.

Set in historic parkland near Belsay and just a 30 minute drive from Burradon Farm, this much‑loved lake offers woodland trails, wildlife encounters and calm waterside views. 

It’s the perfect spot for families, dog walkers, couples and anyone craving fresh air.

Why Visit Bolam Lake?

  • The circular lakeside path is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, making it ideal for all ages and abilities. 
  • The loop is around one mile and is dotted with benches and viewpoints.
  • Bolam Lake is home to red squirrels, roe deer, nuthatches, woodpeckers, swans, geese and other waterfowl. A newly built bird hide offers a peaceful spot to watch wildlife up close.
  • The park blends lakeside views, mature woodland and open grassy areas – perfect for picnics, photography or simply unwinding in nature.
  • There is a unique boardwalk through part of the lakeside path and lots of nooks and crannies to explore!
  • Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the park.
  • Next to the Boathouse Wood car park there is a visitor centre, toilets and café. Opening hours vary seasonally, generally 10am –  4pm in summer and slightly shorter hours in winter.
  • There are three car parks to choose from which are all open during daylight hours.

  • Enjoy a relaxing walk – the circular route is perfect for families with young children, older visitors, wheelchair users and anyone wanting a short, scenic stroll
  • Spot wildlife – keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels in the trees, deer in the woodland and swans gliding across the lake.
  • Picnic by the water – there are plenty of quiet spots to enjoy lunch with a view.
  • Canoeing (with permit) – canoeing is permitted outside breeding season – permits can be arranged via the visitor centre.
