Northumberlandia: The Lady of the North

Look northwards from the back of your cottage and you’ll catch a glimpse of Northumberlandia:  The Lady of the North.

When you think of Northumberland, images of rolling countryside, ancient castles and rugged coastline may spring to mind.

Yet, tucked away just 5 minutes drive from Burradon Farm, lies an awe-inspiring modern landmark that’s quite unlike anything else in the region.

Northumberlandia, affectionately known as the “Lady of the North”.

Northumberlandia is a colossal piece of public art, stretching 400 metres in length and rising up to 34 metres high.

Created from 1.5 million tonnes of earth, the sculpture forms the graceful contours of a reclining female figure.  She is easily visible from the sky and features walking trails that wind around her form.

Designed by renowned landscape architect Charles Jencks, Northumberlandia was completed in 2012 as part of the restoration and landscaping work associated with the nearby Shotton Surface Mine.

What makes Northumberlandia truly unique is her origin. Rather than being carved into the land, she is made from it.

The earth used in her creation was excess material from mining operations, transformed into a place of beauty and recreation instead of simply being discarded.

This innovative approach to land art also means that Northumberlandia is a living sculpture.  Her grassy slopes and wildflower meadows changing with the seasons and providing a haven for local wildlife.

Northumberlandia features a network of footpaths that allow visitors to walk over, around and along the Lady herself.

The paths are well maintained and there are panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from her brow and nose.

There is a packed programme of activities and events throughout the year.  Wildlife activities for children, craft markets and outdoor theatre productions too.

Northumberlandia is open year-round, with the landscape taking on a different character in every season. Whether you’re basking in summer sunshine or witnessing the frosty outlines of winter, Northumberlandia never fails to impress.

Entry is free and there is a visitor centre and café, as well as picnic areas, making it an ideal spot for a family outing or a peaceful walk.

It’s easy to reach by car, with parking available onsite. It’s also close to other Northumberland attractions, making it a perfect addition to any itinerary in the region.

Northumberlandia is dog-friendly and dogs on leads will love exploring the 4 miles of pathways around the sculpture.

The Lady offers space to reflect, explore and marvel at what can be achieved when art and nature come together.

Next time you’re staying at Burradon Farm, don’t miss the chance to experience one of Britain’s most extraordinary landmarks: Northumberlandia.
